College Park, MD – Canada’s top Paralympic hopefuls are set to compete at the 2007 Can-Am swimming Championships in College Park, Maryland, Dec 6-8, 2007. World record holders Benoit Huot and Valérie Grand’Maison of Montréal are poised to compete against their rivals from China, Australia and the United States.

“The meet carries a lot of significance for us; there will be a large contingent of Chinese swimmers in attendance as well as Japanese, Australia and swimmers from the United States,” states Craig McCord, National Coach, Swimmers with a Disability.

“It will be a good test for both our veteran and our young Paralympic prospects.”

Benoit Huot, current long course world record holder in the 200m individual medley, 800m freestyle and the 200m backstroke, will be swimming head to head with American Justin Zook in the 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle. Valérie Grand’Maison’s main competition for the meet will come from American Kelly Becherer in the 50m and 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke. Grand’Maison is the current long course world record holder in the 100m, 200m 400m and 800m freestyle and the 400m individual medley in the S13 category for the visually impaired.

The competition will also feature world record holders and Paralympians Stephanie Dixon of Victoria, Anné Polinario of Montréal, and Donovan Tildesley of Vancouver. It will be one of their last opportunities for these veterans to race against the best in the world, as they prepare for the Paralympic trials in April 2008.

The competition begins Thursday, December 6th through Saturday, December 8th at the University Pool in College Park, Maryland. Preliminaries heats start at 9:00am and finals start at 5:00pm local time.
