Hanus advances to 50-m backstroke final at Youth Olympics


NANJING, China – Danielle Hanus of Newmarket, Ont., qualified second for the women’s 50-m backstroke final on Wednesday in swimming competition at the Youth Olympic Games.

Hanus won her semifinal heat in 28.84 seconds. Only Gabrielle Fa’Amausili of New Zealand, the second semi winner, was faster in 28.78.

It’s been a solid week so far for Hanus in the backstroke events.

She was seventh in both the 100-m and 200-m races and helped Canada to fifth in the 4X100-m medley relay. The 50-m backstroke final is on Thursday.

Swimming competition at the Games continues until Friday. Canada is fielding a seven-member youth team for the event. The other team members are Kelsey Wog and MacKenzie Glover of Winnipeg, Danika Huizinga and Javier Acevedo of Ajax, Ont., Colin Gilbert of Kamloops, B.C., and Matthew Mac of Oakville, Ont.
