Julia Wilkinson breaks second Canadian record at Summer Nationals

WINNIPEG – Canadian Olympic nominee Julia Wilkinson of Stratford, Ont., broke her Canadian record in the women’s 50-metre backstroke during Friday evening’s preliminaries at the Summer Nationals swimming competition being held this week at the Pan Am pool.

Wilkinson clocked 28.53 seconds to better the 28.63 she posted earlier this season. Jennifer Carroll of Montreal ranked second in the prelims in 29.82 and Danielle Carty of Hamilton ranked third in 30.09.

Wilkinson also broke the Canadian record and won the gold medal in the 100 backstroke on Thursday and this morning notched a second win in the 100 freestyle. The competition is simulating the Olympic schedule for Beijing with preliminaries in the evening and finals the following morning.

Other top qualifiers in the women’s prelims were Stephanie Horner of Beaconsfield, Que., in the 400 freestyle, MacKenzie Downing of Victoria in the 100 butterfly and Katy Murdoch of Calgary in the 200 backstroke.

In men’s competition, Ryan Cochrane of Victoria produced a strong preliminary time in the men’s 400 freestyle finishing in 3:49.73. Sean Penhale of Victoria and Frank Despond of Hamilton were second and third in the race respectively.

Other top qualifiers for the men included Matt Rose of Victoria in the 50 backstroke and Charles Francis of Montreal in the 200 backstroke.
