WINNIPEG – Julia Wilkinson of North York, Ont., appears to be on the hunt for more gold after posting the fastest time in the women‘s 200-metre individual medley preliminaries at the Summer Nationals swimming competition.

Wilkinson, with three victories and two national records so far this week, clocked 2:13.63 only 0.31 seconds off the national record set by Erica Morningstar of Calgary earlier this year.

Morningstar ranked second in the prelims at 2:16.53 and Tanya Hunks of Vancouver followed at 2:18.17. All three are tuning up for the Beijing Olympics.

Other top qualifiers in women’s races were Jen Beckberger of Whitby, Ont., in the 50 freestyle and Martha McCabe of Vancouver in the 200 breaststroke.

On the men’s side, 2005 world championship medallist Mike Brown of Calgary was the fastest qualifier in the 200 breaststroke clocking 2:14.05. Marco Monaco of Toronto ranked second at 2:17.20 and Mathieu Bois of Montreal third at 2:19.53.

Other top qualifiers for the men were Nicolas Bovell of Montreal in the 200 IM and Brent Hayden of Vancouver in the 50 freestyle.

Sunday morning’s finals end the competition.
