MacLean and Cochrane reach podium at U.S. Grand Prix


SANTA CLARA , Calif. – Brittany MacLean of Etobicoke, Ont., and two-time
Olympic medallist Ryan Cochrane of Victoria produced podium performances on
Thursday to open the last stop on the U.S. Grand Prix swimming circuit.

In the women’s 1500-m freestyle, Lotte Friis of Denmark took the gold medal
in 16 minutes and 00.35 seconds.  MacLean followed in 16:10.26 and Becca Man

of the U.S. was third in 16:15.01.  The event was a timed final with Friis
and Mann in the first heat while MacLean placed first in the second heat
with the second fastest time overall.

In the men’s 800-m freestyle, Michael McBroom led the U.S. to a 1-2 finish
in 7:49.96 followed by Connor Jaeger in second in 7:50.59 and Cochrane in
7:57.10.  All three swam in the same heat.

Both MacLean and Cochrane are tuning up for the Commonwealth Games in July
and Pan Pacific Championships in August.

Competition runs until Sunday.
