TORONTO – The 2015 Team Canada Trials are off to a fast start at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre
Tonight’s women’s 200-m freestyle will be a showdown of 2014 national team members. Emily Overholt of West Vancouver Otters and Alyson Ackman of Point Claire Swim Club were the top qualifiers with nearly identical times. Overholt (1:59.45) and Ackman (1:59.46) take on defending champion, Brittany MacLean of Etobicoke, Ont.
The trials serve as the selection meet for this summer’s Pan Am Games and FINA World Championships. Fans can follow every second of the action via Swimming.ca’s live webcast. Jeremy Bagshaw of Victoria’s Island Swimming led Canadian qualifiers in the men’s 200-m freestyle (1:49.43). Bagshaw’s club teammate who finished third a year ago, Alec Page and Stefan Milosevic of UBC Dolphins look to challenge for the win on Wednesday night.
After a close race last year, defending Canadian champion Tera Van Beilen of Vancouver, Martha McCabe of Toronto, and Kierra Smith of Kelowna, B.C., each qualified to set up a battle for the women’s 200-m breaststroke title. Smith posted the fastest qualifying time of 2:25.69, while McCabe was second in 2:26.67
Other top qualifiers were Kylie Masse of Windsor, Ont., (1:00.50) and 2013 world championship medallist Hilary Caldwell of White Rock, B.C. (1:00.82), in the women’s 100-m backstroke and Russell Wood of Calgary in the men’s 100-m back (54.16). James Dergousoff of Vancouver’s CHENA club was the top Canadian in the men’s 200-m breaststroke in a time of 2:14.45, a half-second ahead of two-time national team member Richard Funk of Edmonton.
A pair of Commonwealth Games gold medallists, Katerine Savard and Audrey Lacroix, both natives of Pont-Rouge, Que., and last year’s national champion, Sandrine Mainville of Boucherville, Que., qualified for Wednesday night’s 50-m butterfly final. Savard planned to scratch the final to focus on the 200-m freestyle. Vancouverites Samantha Corea (26.43) and Noemie Thomas (26.48) posted the top women’s 50-m butterfly qualifying times.
Santo Condorelli was the top Canadian in the men’s 50-m butterfly at 23.78.
Competition continues through to Saturday. Morning heats begin at 10 a.m. each day, with evening finals sessions at 6 p.m.
