When Mel Davis gave his son’s Olympic medals to the national sports hall of fame, he never expected to ask for them back a decade and a half later.

Now, the framed medallions — two silver and a record-breaking gold — are stored in his son Victor’s childhood bedroom, as are the photographs, training diary and other swimming memorabilia that used to have a home at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Victor was posthumously inducted into the hall in 1990, the year after he was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Montreal.
