Manta Swim Club Relay breaks National Record

57

Saskatoon – Renee Deschenes, Camille Dixon, Chantal VanLandeghem and Jessica Plant from Manta Swim Club in Winnipeg broke the 13 and 14 year old Girls National Record in the 4 x 50 Medley relay with a time of 2:00.00 at the Manitoba Saskatchewan Provincial Championships being held in Saskatoon at Harry Bailey Pool. This breaks the previous mark of 2:00.37 set by the Beaconsfield Bluefins in 2004.

In the first individual event of the meet, Kendra Chernoff of the Saskatoon Goldfins set a new Meet Record and broke the 15 – 17 girls 100 Fly Saskatchewan Provincial Record with a time of 1:01. 21. This eclipses the old mark of 1:02.24 previously set by Elizabeth Collins in 2000. Collins went onto represent Canada at the 2003 Pan American Games.

Over 300 swimmers are in attendance at the competition including clubs not only Manitoba and Saskatchewan but also from Toronto, Thunder Bay, Medicine Hat and Victoria.

For some swimmers this is a tune up meet for the Western Canadian Championships which take place in Victoria February 14 to 17. And for others they are still preparing for the Beijing Swimming Trials which take place April 1 to 8 in Montreal.

More swimmers are making qualifying swims for Western Canadian Championships and Regina Optimist Dolphin Swim Club member Samantha Bancescu achieved her first Senior National Qualifying Time in the 100 Back.
