TORONTO – Keith Beavers of Waterloo, Ont., collected his fourth gold medal this week at the Speedo Eastern Championships swimming competition with a victory in the men’s 400-metre individual medley on Sunday.

Beavers won the race in four minutes and 21.58 seconds. Andrew Ford of Guelph, Ont., was second in 4:30.03 and Tim Ruse of Pointe-Claire, Que., was third in 4:34.29.

Beavers also won the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 IM races this week.

Like many swimmers at this competition Beavers is tuning up for the CN Swimming Trials April 1-6 in Montreal which will determine the Canadian Olympic team. Beavers was a 2004 Olympian.

“I came into this competition in the midst of some hard training and feeling pretty tired,” said Beavers. “Considering all that, the performances here are pretty good. The 400 IM is the win I’m most pleased with of the four. I was feeling pretty rough going in.”

Beavers plans to race all four events he won here with the main focus on the two IM’s and 200 backstroke.

“I have an outside shot in the 100 backstroke but the other three I think I can make the team on,” he said. “In my training there are things we’ll change after my performances here and we’ll look to focus more on speed and power.”

Other winners in men’s competition were Julien Roy-Lavallée of Montreal in the 100 breaststroke, Joe Bartoch of London, Ont., in the 100 butterfly and France Zuccaro of Etobicoke, Ont., in the 200 freestyle. Zuccaro also won the 1,500 freestyle on Thursday and Roy-Lavallée took the 50 breaststroke on Saturday.

In women’s competition, Amanda Reason of London, Ont., collected her second gold of the competition winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.85. Laura Sogar of a visiting U.S., club was second in 1:11.33 and Ashley McGregor of Pointe-Claire, Que., was third in 1:12.23.
