Brandford, ON – Sixteen year old Hassaan Abdel-Khalik of the Etobicoke Swim Club swam a time of 1:47.74 setting a new unofficial National Age Group record in the 200m freestyle at the Swim International Brantford meet last weekend. Hassaan, coached by Kevin Thorburn, lowered Alex Baumann’s 15-17 year old short course national record set in 1981.

Hassaan Abdel-Khalik, who was born in Egypt, will compete with Canada’s Junior National Team at the 2009 Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Guam.

Before leaving for Guam, Adbel-Khalik will be competing at the prestigious Canada Cup to be held in his home pool at the end of November.

This talented young swimmer also holds the provincial short course record in the 11-12 year-old 200m freestyle event, and in the long course 13-14 year-old 200m freestyle.
Abdel-Khalik’s recalls that another of his favorite swimming memory was when his goggles snapped before the 200m freestyle “B” Final at Olympic Trials.

The 2008 Canada Cup will take place at the Etobicoke Olympium from November 28-30, 2008. Webcasting for the finals sessions will be available on SwimCAN WebTV at www.swimming.ca
