Toronto, ON – Swimming Canada’s CEO and National Coach Pierre Lafontaine officially announced today that Island Swimming’ Randy Bennett has been appointed to the Head Coach Position for the 2009 FINA World Aquatic Championships in Rome next summer.

“I’m very happy to welcome Randy as Head Coach of the 2009 Worlds Team,” said Lafontaine.

Bennett, who coached 20 year-old Ryan Cochrane to a bronze medal finish in the men’s 1500m freestyle at Beijing Olympics, will lead the senior team as they prepare for the 13th Fina Worlds in Rome from July 19 to August 2, 2009.

“It’s a great honor to be named Head Coach of the World Championship team. I’m very grateful that my club Island Swimming is supportive of me taking on this challenge,” said Bennett. “Pierre Lafontaine and 2008 Olympic Head Coach Tom Johnson have instilled a great chemistry between coaches in Canada and it’s by continuing to work together that we will be a stronger nation in the pool.”

Swimming Canada will be selecting its 2009 World Championship Team next summer at Parc Jean Drapeau pool in Montreal on July 8-11, 2009.
