First-year forward and scoring sensation Craig Gorman (Victoria, B.C.) is Canada West’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 30. Gorman scored two goals and set up the third in UVic’s final weekend of the regular season, with victories over Saskatchewan and Alberta. Both goals scored were the game winning goals to help boost the Vikes into first place in the conference standings and give them hosting duties for the Canada West Final Four, Nov. 5-6. Gorman leads the Vikes in goals scored (6) and points (9), tied for fifth in conference points overall.
Gorman, a science major at UVic, made his freshman debut for the Vikes in late-August and has continued to improve every week. His biggest accomplishments were in helping the Vikes earn their first win at home against Saskatchewan. Gorman scored two goals and assisted the other two goals scored by Thomas Mallette. From there, Gorman earned another two-goal game against Fraser Valley in Victoria on Oct. 2 and scored a big goal in UVic’s win over Trinity Western on Oct. 15.
The UVic men’s soccer team clinched first place in Canada West with a 10-2-2 record. After hosting the CW Final Four, UVic will also host the CIS national championship. The veteran-laden squad is undefeated in the past 12 games as they move into the playoffs this weekend.
Canada West’s female Athlete of the Week was Janine Frazao of UBC’s women’s soccer team.
