Abbotsford, BC: Defending Rounsefell Cup champions Oak Bay Castaway Wanderers marked their return to Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League play with a seven-try 45-15 win over Abbotsford RFC.

Abbotsford led 5-0 early on but a series of costly mistakes saw the Castaway Wanderers run in four quick scores for a 33-5 half time lead.

“We started out really well with a lot of possession but then we made a couple key mistakes with some unforced errors and they capitalized on them,” said Abbotsford head coach Jason Young. “The difference in the first half was the turnover ball and how [CW] were able to score off of that.”

In the second half, Abbotsford found their footing and held CW to just 12 points, while recording two tries of their own.

Oak Bay’s offence was led by Isaac Bainivula’s two tries and Ander Monro’s five conversions. Singles were notched through Clayton Daum, Kiel Horan, Ken Goodland, Johnny Morris and Mack Poole.

Abbotsford’s tries were recorded by Darwin Guevara, Lucas De Beer and Gareth Bartlett but the Fraser Valley club were unable to match their heroics produced in a 24-22 win over Burnaby Lake last weekend to secure their participation in the 2011-2012 Premier League.

“After such a big game last week against Burnaby we had quite a few injuries. It’s always tough a week later to go up against a team like Oak Bay when they have [World Cup] players like Ander Monro, Matt Weingart, Hubert Buydens and Andrew Tiedemann,” Young added. “No excuses though, we played hard. Their experience showed against us but our guys have to play at that level if they want to be here.”

In the Ceili’s Cup League, featuring the First Division sides, CW held Abbotsford try-less in a 41-3 decision. CW’s Jed Alexander and Fletcher Evans each recorded two tries a piece with further scores coming from Brendon Pritchard, Paddy Bryden and Mike Dalsin. Brandon Gerhardt kicked three conversions to round out the scoring. Abbotsford’s three points came courtesy of a penalty by Jordan Tait-Comis.
