EVERETT, WA – The Everett Silvertips couldn’t get much going their way in a 4-1 loss to the Prince George Cougars Friday night at Comcast Arena. Prior to the loss, the Silvertips welcomed the two-millionth fan in franchise history with a special presentation and a great Silvertips prize pack.
16-year-old rookie defenseman Austin Adam provided the Silvertips with their only offense, scoring his first WHL goal in the third period to get the ‘Tips on the board. Kent Simpson made 27 saves in Everett’s sixth straight loss, which put the club two points behind the Cougars in the Western Conference standings going into Saturday night’s rematch.
Neither team registered a shot on goal until almost three minutes into the opening period. The Silvertips had a full two minutes of 5-on-3 powerplay time midway through, but couldn’t capitalize as the game stayed scoreless. Prince George then got on the board a short time later when Spencer Asuchak scored from between the circles. 20 seconds into a Cougar powerplay later in the period, Cody Carlson deflected a point shot into the net to put the visitors up 2-0 heading into the second frame.
A tight second period resulted in another Prince George goal as defensemen Martin Marincin sailed a wrist shot from the blue line over Simpson’s shoulder, extending their lead to three. As the buzzer sounded to end the second period, Jesse Mychan fought the Cougars’ Jesse Forsberg and Nick Walters also dropped the gloves with former teammate Campbell Elynuik.
The ‘Tips earned a few more scoring chances in the third period, finally getting on the board when Austin Adam stepped into a Josh Birkholz pass and fired a shot past Drew Owsley to make it 3-1. Unfortunately the Silvertips were unable to build on that momentum with another goal and Asuchak tacked on a late empty-netter to complete Prince George’s 4-1 victory.
Kent Simpson (4-11-0-2) suffered the loss after a 27-save effort, while Drew Owsley (5-10-0-1) picked up the win with 18 stops. Everett went 0 for 3 on the powerplay and Prince George was 1 for 3. The Cougars
