EVERETT, WA – Ryan Harrison scored a pair of goals and goaltender Austin Lotz earned his first career victory as the Everett Silvertips defeated the Prince George Cougars 3-2 in the second game of a back-to-back set Saturday night at Comcast Arena. The victory ended a six-game losing skid for the Silvertips, who pulled back into a tie with Prince George for ninth place in the Western Conference with their fifth win of the season.
Cody Fowlie netted Everett’s winning goal in a crazy game that featured a penalty shot, two five-minute major penalties and subsequent game misconducts, three powerplay goals and a four-on-four tally. In his third start of the season, Lotz finished with 21 saves on the way to his first career win.
The teams combined for just 11 total shots in the first period and neither was able to find the back of the net in the first 20 minutes. Jesse Mychan was awarded a penalty shot halfway through the period when he was taken down on a breakaway, but was stopped by Cougars goaltender Drew Owsley to keep the game scoreless after one. The ‘Tips were also a perfect 3-for-3 killing penalties in the opening frame.
Charles Inglis was given a five-minute major for a hit on Josh Birkholz in the waning seconds of the first period, setting up a lengthy Everett powerplay to start the second. Ryan Harrison scored twice on the ensuing man-advantage, opening the scoring at the 3:28 mark with a perfect top-shelf wrist shot over Owsley’s shoulder. His second tally came with only 10 seconds remaining in the powerplay as a centering feed to Kohl Bauml ricocheted off a Prince George skate and in to give the Silvertips a 2-0 lead.
Prince George got back within one with a powerplay goal of their own less than three minutes later when Spencer Asuchak directed Alex Forsberg’s centering pass inside the far post. With the teams skating four-on-four after Jesse Mychan was given a five-minute major for a hit on Jesse Forsberg (who also drew a double-minor on the play), the ‘Tips would extend their lead to two once more when Cody Fowlie tapped in a beautiful cross-ice pass from Josh Winquist. Everett went to the locker room with that 3-1 lead intact.
The Cougars again drew within one in the third after Greg Fraser scored on a rebound following a quick rush at 6:41. The Silvertips held Prince George to just nine total shots in the third period and held on the rest of the way to earn the 3-2 victory. It was Everett’s first regulation win in a one-goal game this season.
Austin Lotz (1-3-0-0) came away with first-star honors after his first career win, while Drew Owsley (5-11-0-1) finished with 22 saves in defeat. The ‘Tips outshot the Cougars 25-23 on the night and converted two of three powerplay chances. Everett also killed off five of six Prince George powerplays.
