Richard Townsend-Gant of Portland, Oregon had a solid opening weekend for the VIU Men’s

basketball squad, helping lead the M’s to a pair of convincing wins. In a limited action and just 42 total minutes between the two games, Gant went for a combined 37 points and 20 rebounds.ganty

In Friday nights 87-68 victory over Langara the third year forward had an impressive 24 points on 10

of 16 shooting (3/5 from beyond the arc), and a team leading 12 rebounds in 24 minutes of action.

On Saturday, Gant played just 18 minutes in a lop-sided victory over the Kwantlen Eagles. In the 81-

51 victory Gant once again led the Mariners in scoring with 13, as well as grabbing a team leading 8


This was a very solid start for the Mariners and a nice opening weekend for Richard Townsend-Gant.

This coming weekend the M’s will head to the mainland for a pair of games against CBC and Douglas.


jjonesJocelyn Jones is a third year guard from Highline Community College (Seattle) where she was a first team

league all star in leading her team to a 14-2 record. In her first weekend of league action

wearing a VIU uniform, Jocelyn led the team to two victories.

On Friday vs Langara, Jocelyn had 24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in 23 minutes

in a 72-37 win.

On Saturday vs Kwantlen, Jocelyn had 19 points and had 4 assists in a 74-47 win.

“Jocelyn has been a nice addition to our team this year. She provides us with athleticism and

toughness on the defensive end while being able to score in a variety of ways” stated coach

McWhinnie. “Not only is she putting up big offensive numbers, but she has the job of guarding

the opponents best perimeter player, each Game.
