Everett Silvertips

EVERETT, WA – Two members of the Everett Silvertips were named among the Western Hockey League’s top ten draft-eligible skaters when NHL Central Scouting released its preliminary rankings for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft Thursday. Defenseman Ryan Murray was ranked #1 out of all WHL skaters, while fellow Everett D-man Nick Walters rounded out the league’s top ten – six of whom are defensemen.

NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary rankings list the top 25 draft-eligible skaters and as many as seven goaltenders from each of the top junior hockey leagues in North America, including the WHL, OHL, QMJHL and USHL. These initial ranking will then be revised in January with Central Scouting’s annual mid-term report.

Murray, 18, has been projected as an early first-round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, which takes place on June 22 at Pittsburgh’s Consol Energy Center. The White City, Saskatchewan native and third-year Silvertip and was named the youngest Captain in franchise history midway through last season. In 132 career games with Everett, he has 79 points (14g/65a), 91 penalty minutes and a franchise-record plus/minus rating of +47.

Walters, 17, is in his second season with Everett after breaking into the WHL as a rookie last year. He is tied for second among ‘Tips defenders with six points and also has 38 penalty minutes this season. The St. Albert, Alberta native has totaled ten points (2g/8a) and 90 penalty minutes in 69 career games as a Silvertip.

Four other defensemen directly followed Murray to round out the top five skaters in the WHL rankings, including #2 Morgan Reilly (Moose Jaw), #3 Mathew Dumba (Red Deer), #4 Derrick Pouliot (Portland) and #5 Griffin Reinhart (Edmonton).
