Two goals by both Breanne George and Julie Paetsch led the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 5-3 win over the visiting No. 3 ranked University of Calgary Dinos Friday in Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink.

George, the 2009 Canada West MVP, tallied at 10:34 in the first period on a power play and again at 2:52 in the third period. Paetsch scored her set of goals at 16:05 short handed and added an empty netter at 19:47.

Special teams were on show in the game with each team scoring two goals and Saskatchewan adding the short handed goal.

With the win the Huskies improve to 6-3 on the season, while Calgary falls to 7-2-0.

Calgary jumped out early notching the first goal on the power play when Melissa Zubick’s shot beat Mackenzie Rizos stick side just 3:50 into the game. George and Paetsch’s goals gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead before Canada West leading scorer Elana Lovell scored on the power play to tie the game at 17:41 in the first.

Kristin Bews tallied the other Huskie goal at 8:21 in the second period on the power play, while Iya Gavrilova scored the third Calgary goal at 17:26 in the final frame.

Rizos made 30 saves in the game for the Huskies, while Amanda Tapp scored 23 shots. It is the first time this season Tapp has allowed more than one goal in a game.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is 7 p.m.

Game Notes: National team member and Olympian Hayley Wickheiser wasn’t in the lineup Friday night but is expected to play Saturday.
