Scoring 51 points in the second half, the No. 7 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 83-67 Friday at the PAC in Saskatoon.
Down 41-32 at halftime, the Huskies picked up their game in the final half scoring 25 points in the third quarter and 26 points in the fourth quarter for the win. An Evan Ostertag three-point shot put the Huskies a head 45-43 at 6:21 in the third quarter and the Huskies never looked back.
With the win the Huskies move to 2-2 on the season, while Lethbridge drops to 3-2.
Lethbridge came out firing in the first quarter outscoring the Huskies 23-12 on the strength of 11 points by Daryl Cooper. The Huskies played tighter defence and started the bid for the comeback in the second quarter outscoring the ‘Horns by two at 20-18.
Four Huskies scored in double digits on the night. Fifth-year forward Michael Lieffers led the Huskies with 18 points and eight rebounds, while rookie guard Ostertag chipped in 16 points. Peter Lomuro added another 14 and Duncan Jones scored 10.
Cooper tallied a game-high 25 points for the Pronghorns, while Dominyc Coward added another 10 and nabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Saskatchewan finished the game shooting 50.8%, while the Pronghorns shot just 32% in the loss.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
