VICTORIA – The University of Victoria’s department of athletics and recreation honoured 63 student-athletes today for achieving Honour Roll distinction in the 2010-11 academic year, earning an academic average of 80 per cent or better, based on GPA of 6.6 and over.
For the seventh year, the Vikes honoured these recipients at a luncheon held at the University Club.
“This is an important day for our department as we recognize and honour more than one in four Vikes who achieve this high academic standard,” said Clint Hamilton, director of athletics and recreation at UVic. “We are very proud of our consistently high showing with student-athletes who achieve this noteworthy distinction and we will continue to provide resources to help our Vikes realize their potential.”
Also, the department presented the Provost Award for Academic Excellence to rower Jon Chandler. This honour is given to a returning student-athlete with the highest academic average who has satisfied the minimum requirements for acclamation as an Academic All-Canadian based on the previous year. Chandler of Brentwood Bay, B.C., earned an 8.75 GPA in 2010-11 and he is a member of the Vikes rowing team that won team bronze at the recent Canadian University Rowing Championship in Welland, Ont., and rowed on the men’s lightweight four winning silver and men’s eight crew winning bronze this season.
