OTTAWA (CIS) – McGill hockey player Leslie Oles and Ottawa basketball player Warren Ward are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 20, 2011.
Oles, a second-year physical education student from Beaconsfield, Que., scored five goals and assisted on two others as the top-ranked and reigning CIS champion Martlets swept a pair of road games over Montreal and Ottawa. The 5-foot-3 forward celebrated her 21st birthday with a hat-trick and one helper in a 10-1 victory against the Carabins last Friday, and then added two more goals – including the game-winner – and set up another in Sunday’s 5-1 win over the Gee-Gees. The seven-point performance moved Oles into first place in the RSEQ scoring race with a 10-4-14 record in nine games.
Basketball players Cassie Cooke of Cape Breton, Ashleigh Cleary of Carleton and Lindsay Ledingham of Regina were also nominated for the women’s award.
Ward, a fourth-year arts student from London, Ont., had back-to-back 20-plus-point performances as the Gee-Gees evened their regular season record to 2-2 thanks to a 69-65 upset win over then-No. 6-ranked Windsor and a convincing 84-57 victory against Western. In Ottawa’s home opener last Friday, the 6-foot-5 guard tallied a game-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds in 28 minutes of court time to help the Gee-Gees hand the Lancers their first loss of the campaign. On Saturday, he once again led all players with 21 points while adding nine boards in 26 minutes of action in the win over the Mustangs.
Dalhousie swimmer Kyle Watson, UQTR hockey player Jean-Sébastien Breton and UBC volleyball player Robert Bennett were the other male nominees.
