EVERETT, WA – The Everett Silvertips fell behind 3-0 in the first period and couldn’t recover in a 5-2 loss to the Regina Pats Friday night at Comcast Arena. The road team has now won eight consecutive head-to-head games between the Pats and Silvertips, who will play host to the Swift Current Broncos Saturday night to complete their homestand.
Kohl Bauml scored Everett’s first goal on his 17th birthday, while Josh Birkholz tallied his tenth score of the season. Dominik Bittner posted two assists in the contest and Carson Samoridny also registered his first WHL point with an assist on Bauml’s goal.
The Silvertips ran into penalty trouble early in the game to set up Regina’s first goal, as Jordan Weal sped into the offensive zone and ripped a shot inside the post from the high slot. The Pats doubled to the lead later in the first period on a perfect shot by Dominek Volek, who put the puck into the top corner of Austin Lotz’ right shoulder. Weal then potted his second of the night just over a minute later, re-directing Brandon Davidson’s pass into the net to give Regina a 3-0 lead heading into the second period. Lotz was replaced in net by Kent Simpson after Regina’s third goal.
After having a Josh Winquist powerplay goal disallowed during a powerplay midway through the second frame, Everett did get on the board late in the same powerplay. Kohl Bauml recovered his own rebound and made no mistake on his second shot, scoring his third goal of the year to make it a 3-1 game. Regina got the three-goal edge back when Dyson Stevenson deflected Art Bidlevskii’s doorstep feed into the net with four minutes left in the period. Josh Birkholz cut into the lead again late in the stanza however, rifling a perfect shot top-shelf off the rush to put Everett’s deficit at 4-2 after two.
The ‘Tips outshot the Pats 13-7 in the third period, but couldn’t get anything past Matt Hewitt to close the gap. Matt Marantz then added an insurance goal on the powerplay as Regina finished off the 5-2 win.
Austin Lotz (1-4-0-1) took the loss after stopping 13 shots in the first 16:39, while Simpson finished with 11 stops in the final 43:21. Matt Hewitt (13-6-1-1) made 23 stops as the Pats outshot the ‘Tips 29-25. Everett scored on one of its two powerplays, with Regina finishing 2 of 7.
