The University of Saskatchewan Huskies will look to close out the first half of the Canada West women’s hockey season on a high note against provincial foes the University of Regina Cougars.
The teams will meet Thursday in Regina at the Co-operators Centre before returning to Saskatoon Saturday afternoon.
Saskatchewan enters the series just two points back from the top of the conference standings with an 8-4 record. Regina has had a bumpy start to the season with a 4-7-1 record.
Since 2004-05, the Huskies have a 20-13-3 record against Regina including a sweep to open the Canada West season. In the last 20 meetings between the teams, the Huskies have outscored the Cougars 82-39.
Paige Wheeler leads the Cougars with five goals and two assists on the season. Other scoring for the Cougars has come from Rianne Wight and rookies Brooklyn Moskowy and Stephanie Sawchuk. Wight has five assists and two goals, while Sawchuk has tallied two goals and one helper. Moskowy sits second on the team with four goals.
Four Huskies sit in the Top 15 in conference scoring including Julie Paetsch, Breanne George, Cara Wooster and Danny Stone. Paetsch leads the Huskies and sits third in the Canada West with five goals and 11 assists. George has added eight goals and three assists, while Wooster has tallied four goals and seven assists. Stone has pitched in with five goals and five helpers.
Lisa Urban and rookie goaltender Jennifer Schmidt have split time in net for the Cougars this season. Urban has recorded a .874 save percentage and a 3.46 goals against average, while Schmidt sits at a .917 save percentage and a 2.73 goals against average.
Mackenzie Rizos has started eight games for the Huskies posting a 6-2 record and two shutouts. Rizos has tallied a 1.96GAA and a .927 save percentage. Backup Vanessa Frederick has four games under her belt allowing just six goals.
