Nanaimo – The first weekend of Operation Red Nose was Great! Rudy and the 36 Operation Red Nose volunteers drove a total of 1682 km to deliver 69 people safely to their destination on November 25th and 26th. What a great start to the designated driver service.
“We are very excited this year as we are offering 12 nights of service instead of 10,” says Grace Bell, ORN Coordinator. “Volunteers are the back bone of this program. Operation Red Nose is always looking for more volunteers… the more volunteers who sign up the more people will be getting home safely. We are especially looking for volunteers in the Ladysmith area. The more the merrier.” To volunteer call 250-740-6572.
The service is completely free; however, smiles, and donations are always welcome. PacificSport Vancouver Island General Manager Drew Cooper sums up Operation Red Nose the best when he states: “Red Nose is a win-win program in the community. It creates safer streets by providing an alternative to drinking and driving during the holiday season and proceeds support local athletes.
Founded in Quebec City in 1984, Operation Red Nose is a program dedicated towards preventing impaired driving. Hosted by PacificSport in Nanaimo, Operation Red Nose is currently in its 15th year of successful service. Last year Nanaimo’s Operation Red Nose volunteers safely delivered over 1800 people safely to their destinations. In turn, this brings to light the popularity and importance of services such as Operation Red Nose, particularly when holiday celebrations are at their height of the season.
The Operation Red Nose designated driver service is provided during the holidays to individuals who do not feel fit to drive for whatever reason. It is a confidential, safe, and effective way of getting you, your passengers and your car home at the end of the night by allowing a team of volunteers to do the driving for you. Dates of service are November 25th and 26th, December 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 22rd, 23rd, 30th and New Year’s Eve. Call the Operation Red Nose Hotline 250-755-6969 for your ride home between 9:00pm and 3:00am.
