Ty Rattie registered his second hat trick of the season as the Portland Winterhawks (20-9-1-1) won a 5-3 decision in Prince George over the Cougars (9-19-0-2) Tuesday night for their fifth straight win.

The Hawks opened the game with two goals from Rattie in the first period to take a 2-0 lead into the second. Sven Bartschi assisted on both goals, and the points extended both players’ scoring streaks to seven games apiece.

Prince George responded with two goals in the second period from Jordan Tkatch to even the game at 2-2 going into the third.

The Cougars took a 3-2 lead 2:47 into the third on a goal by Martin Marincin, but the Hawks evened the game at the 5:01 mark when Rattie scored to complete the hat trick and tie the game at 3-3. The game remained tied through much of the third, until with just 1:25 remaining in regulation Nic Petan scored to put the Hawks up 4-3. They added an empty net goal from Brad Ross to finish with the 5-3 win.

Rattie’s three goals give him a league-leading 31 on the season in just 30 games. Bartschi finished with three assists, as he tops the league in that category with 40 helpers. Rattie is tied for second in the WHL with 58 points, while Bartschi is fourth with 52 points.

Portland netminder Mac Carruth picked up his 19th win with 35 saves on 38 shots. Cougars netminder Drew Owsley made 40 saves on 44 Portland shots. Both teams were 1-2 on the power play.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night in Prince George.
