EVERETT, WA – Another one-goal game through two periods turned in to a Silvertips loss Saturday night at Comcast Arena, as the leading-leading Tri-City Americans skated away with a 5-1 win over Everett. The Silvertips’ winless streak has now reached a franchise-record nine consecutive games with two contests remaining prior to the WHL holiday break.
JT Barnett scored for the second straight night for Everett, who trailed just 2-1 going into the third period. Leading scorers Josh Birkholz and Cody Fowlie assisted on that goal to tie the game at one early in the second. Patrick Holland scored two of three third-period goals for the Americans to help salt away their first regulation win over Everett in three tries this season.
There was no score in the game for most of the opening period until Tri-City struck first late in the stanza. Brendan Shinnimin circled the net and found Adam Hughesman at the far post for a tap-in goal at 17:23 to put the Ams up 1-0 after one. The ‘Tips quickly tied the game early in the second period on a great passing sequence that resulted in JT Barnett’s goal. Josh Birkholz started the rush and dropped the puck to Cody Fowlie, who found Barnett with a pass across the slot for the finish to knot the score at one.
With just 1:06 remaining in the second period however, an Everett turnover led to Brian Williams’ shot that rung off the crossbar and bounced in to put Tri-City up 2-1 going into the third. That goal would prove to be a sign of things to come for the Silvertips, as Patrick Holland’s two third-period scores bookended a Shinnimin goal that help the Americans roll to the 5-1 win.
Kent Simpson (4-16-0-3) made 31 saves in defeat as the ‘Tips were outshot 36-22. Everett missed on all four of its powerplay chances, while Tri-City went 1 for 5. Winning goaltender Eric Comrie (11-3-0-0) stopped 21 shots for the Americans.
