The Portland Winterhawks (20-11-2-1) fell 3-0 Sunday against the Tri-City Americans (25-7-0-0) in Kennewick, WA.

The Hawks were playing without leading scorer Ty Rattie, Brad Ross and Joe Morrow, who are at Canada’s World Junior tryout camp.

The Americans opened the scoring 3:40 into the game on a goal by Jordan Messier, and later followed with a goal by Connor Rankin to take a 2-0 lead into the second period.

Rankin struck again at the 8:53 mark of the second to give the Americans a 3-0 lead, which would remain the score going into the third period.

The Hawks applied pressure in the third, but neither team could find the back of the net, and Tri-Cities finished with the 3-0 win.

Mac Carruth made 26 saves on 29 shots for Portland, while Americans netminder Ty Rimmer stopped all 28 of Portland’s shots.

The Hawks return to Portland to practice this week, then hit the road to take on the Spokane Chiefs Saturday in their final game before the league’s holiday break.
