Nanaimo, BC – The third weekend of Operation Red Nose was awesome! Rudy and the 70 Operation Red Nose volunteers drove a total of 3457 km to deliver more than 200 people safely to their destination on December 9th and 10th. Along with our long time regulars, the Nanaimo Parks, Recreation & Culture Arenas Team was among the enthusiastic volunteers this past weekend. Residents from Lantzville to Ladysmith are encouraged to sign up as volunteers as soon as possible. More volunteers are needed for the remaining 6 nights of Operation Red Nose, especially on Dec. 23rd and 31st. It is not too late to become ‘Rudy’s little helpers’.”
The service is completely free; however, smiles, and donations are always welcome. PacificSport General Manager Drew Cooper sums up Operation Red Nose the best when he states: “Red Nose is a win-win program in the community. It creates safer streets by providing an alternative to drinking and driving during the holiday season and proceeds support local youth and athletes in their attempt to develop healthy life styles.
Founded in Quebec City in 1984, Operation Red Nose is a program dedicated towards preventing impaired driving. Hosted by PacificSport in Nanaimo, Operation Red Nose is currently in its 16th year of successful service. Last year Nanaimo’s Operation Red Nose volunteers safely delivered over 1500 Nanaimoites safely to their destinations. In turn, this brings to light the popularity and importance of services such as Operation Red Nose, particularly when holiday celebrations are at their height of the season.
The Operation Red Nose designated driver service is provided during the holidays to individuals who do not feel fit to drive for whatever reason. It is a confidential, safe, and effective way of getting you, your passengers and your car home at the end of the night by allowing a team of volunteers to do the driving for you. Dates of service begin on November 25th and 26th, December 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 22nd, 23rd, 30th and New Years Eve. Call the Operation Red Nose Hotline 250-755-6969 for your ride home between 9:00pm and 3:00am.
