Brandon Wheat Kings
Brandon, MB. — The Brandon Wheat Kings opened up the final week of their pre-Christmas schedule Tuesday night with a 5-3 victory over the visiting Kelowna Rockets at Westman Communications Group Place.
Three unanswered second period goals and some solid netminding by Brandon Anderson helped the Wheat Kings to the win, improving their record to 20-13-1-1 on the season.
With the score tied at one through twenty minutes of play, the Wheat Kings took over control of the game in the second on goals by Dominick Favreau, Alessio Bertaggia and Jason Swyripa.
The Rockets did manage to get back to within two goals on two separate occasions in the third but that was it as the Wheat Kings bounced back from Sunday afternoon’s disappointing loss to the Hitmen in Calgary.
A former member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Anderson was making his third straight start in the Brandon net after Corbin Boes suffered a broken hand during Friday’s loss in Edmonton. The Langley, B.C. native turned aside 37 shots on the night, including seventeen in the third period when the Rockets outshot Brandon 19-12.
Anderson was one of two players acquired by the Wheat Kings in separate October deals by general manager Kelly McCrimmon. The other was power forward Darian Dziurzynski, who scored twice and set up another for the winners on Tuesday.
Former Saskatoon product Colton Sissons scored twice in a losing cause for the Rockets, while Carter Rigby rounded out the scoring. Adam Brown made 35 saves in the Kelowna net.
The Wheat Kings, who will play host to the visiting Kamloops Blazers on Friday night to bring the curtain down on the first half of the 2011-12 Western Hockey League regular season, welcomed 19-year old left-winger Michael Ferland back to the lineup on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, he was one of seven players released by Team Canada at their National Junior Selection Camp in Calgary.
Tuesday’s win moves Brandon into sole posession of second place in the WHL’s Eastern Division – two points behind the front running Moose Jaw Warriors and one up on third place Saskatoon.
