Velox 3rds: Island Champs
Story by Glenn Ivens (ISN) with files from John Lyall
The Velox Valhallian Thirds traveled up to Comox Sunday to contest the Island Championship.
Comox and Velox have had a fierce battle of over the past two years, with Comox coming out on top back in September with a convincing win. Comox came into the game as the number one seed with an undefeated 10-0 record while Velox the number two seed sat at 8-2.
The game was played in beautiful conditions in Cumberland, with a relatively large crowd out to cheer on the hometown Kickers. Comox took advantage of a flat start by Velox, when their fleet footed backs crossed the line under the posts to take an early 7-0 lead.
Velox regrouped and began to apply pressure from the scrums and line outs. An unconverted try from a lineout cut into the Comox lead. Another try by Velox and a penalty kick by Comox saw a hard hitting first half end 10-10.
Velox opened the second half playing downhill and began controlling territory. Velox went back in the lead with a converted try but Comox came back firing and added an unconverted try to reduce the Velox lead to 17-15. Velox would add another converted try to close out the game 24-15 and a fourth consecutive Island 3rd Division Championship.
The Third division trophy, a trophy only a mother could loveis awarded in the Spring and Fall of each VIRU season. The Island 3rd Division is a competitive battleground, and today’s game was a testament to the quality of play.
Thank you to Comox for hosting us in a tough battle on the field and in trademark hospitality afterwards. Thank you to all the players, trainers, club and supporters who have made the Velox Thirds first half a success. Happy holidays to all, and see you in the Spring!
