The team really began to take shape midway through the season with big wins over Lethbridge and Calgary. The Vikes also closed out the season with three straight wins – one against Regina and two against the University of Fraser Valley. Their regular season record of 5-6-3 pushed the Vikes into fourth, good for the final spot at the Canada West Final Four playoffs.
The Vikes faced hosts Trinity Western in their first round of the playoffs, conceding a 3-0 loss to the Spartans. The loss put the women’s team into the bronze medal match, with UBC defeateing them 2-1 to leave the Vikes in fourth place.
UVic relied heavily upon the two-way efforts of second-year midfielder Jaclyn Sawicki (Coquitlam, BC), who missed a few games early in the season due to competition with the Canadian national team. The Vikes’ first two season losses occurred while Sawicki was away. Sawicki led the Vikes with nine points, scoring three goals and earning six assists.
The Vikes had solid, consistent performances from midfielder Jacqueline Harrison (Whitehorse, YK), defender Carsen Machin (Richmond, BC), as well as fourth-year net minder Stephanie Parker(Chemainus, BC). Parker played all 14 games, earning a .835 save percentage and three shutouts.
The Vikes ended the season with Amy Lawrence (Burnaby, BC) being named to the Canada West All Star list, while Sawicki was further honoured as a CIS Second Team All-Canadian. The Vikes will lose fifth-year Sarah Clark (North Vancouver, BC) with the majority of the current squad returning. The team will compete in the 2012 CIS national championships, Nov 8-11, as tournament hosts.
