Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria Hockey Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Robin Gomez as Assistant Coach for the balance of the 2011-12 BC Intercollegiate Hockey League season.
Gomez will join Head Coach Harry Schamhart and Assistant Coach Cole Byers on the bench for UVic in the New Year as the team looks to rebound from a disappointing 3-7-2 start. “We’re very excited to have Robin join our coaching staff,” said Schamhart, “Robin will provide a wealth of knowledge as a player and a voice that we believe will compliment Cole and I extremely well.”
Gomez served as the Head Coach of the Saanich Braves of the VIJHL during the 2010-11 season where he held a 15-23-6 record. Gomez also played in 459 games over an eight year professional career, collecting 177 points and 1633 minutes in penalties. Most recently, Gomez spent the 2009-10 season with the Bloomington Prairie Thunder of the IHL and the 2008-09 season with the Oklahoma City Blazers of the CHL.
From 2002-08, Gomez spent the majority of his time in the ECHL as a member of the South Carolina Stingrays and Victoria Salmon Kings where he competed in 294 games, collecting 108 points (52G-56A) and 1026 minutes in penalties. During these six seasons, Gomez also played in 15 AHL contests and spent 29 games with the Manchester Phoenix of the EIHL. Prior to 2002, Gomez played his junior hockey in the WHL as a member of the Calgary Hitmen and Seattle Thunderbirds where he amassed 187 games played, 62 points (22G-40A) and 664 minutes in penalties.
UVic will look to start the second half of the season on a winning note as they play host to the Selkirk College Saints at the Ian Stewart Complex Arena on Saturday, January 7th 2012. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00PM.
