WINNIPEG, Man. – The UBC Okanagan Heat advanced to the semi finals of the 2011 Coca Cola Wesmen Classic with a slim 64-61 victory over the Minot State University Beavers in their opening match of the 45th edition of the annual tournament being held at the University of Winnipeg.

Third year guard Yassine Ghomari (Vancouver, BC) led the Heat with 13 points, including 8-of-10 from the free throw line. First year guard Bret Macdonald (Port Coquitlam, BC) finished with a double-double 11 points and a game high 10 rebounds, for his efforts Macdonald was named the Player of the Game for UBC Okanagan. Fifth year post player Steve Morrison (N. Vancouver, BC) also finished with 11 points.

Junior guard Yonas Behre led the Beavers with 19 points, including three-three pointers and was tabbed as the Minot State Player of the Game.

The Heat started quick with third year Mack Roth (Wing, Port Coquitlam, BC) nailing two threes in the first quarter as the Heat led 19-14 at the end of the quarter. The Beavers used a 15-2 run in the second quarter and sent the Heat into the half trailing Minot State 31-25.

UBC Okanagan scored 23 points in the third quarter to cut the Beavers lead to one, 50-49. A three at 8:48 in the fourth quarter by Bret Macdonald gave the Heat their first lead of the half, 54-53. UBC Okanagan were able to hold that lead the rest of the game as Minot State’s last second three rims out to preserve the Heat victory.

UBC Okanagan coach Darren Semeniuk said that “the win feels good,” adding that even with the extended time off and lack of practice before their game that “team played pretty good.”

UBC Okanagan will face the University of Brandon Bobcats in one semi final Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. PST. Minot State will face UNBC tomorrow at 10 a.m. PST. The Heat fell at home to the Bobcats 81-68 in their last regular season game of the first semester.
