The UVic men’s basketball team fell 64-87 to Concordia University Irvine, of the NAIA Division 1 on Dec. 28.
The first half was a classic back and forth battle, with the score tied four separate times but the Vikes were unable to take the lead. Both teams had a shot percentage over 45% and both defensive lines battled tobe consistent. The Eagles and Vikes scored from inside and outside, keeping the stanza balanced, overall.
The second half continued on pace with the first, but it was Concordia who began to create some separation on the board. Concordia’s Austin Simon led an 8-0 run and with 15:35 left, put the Eagles up 52-42. The Vikes used an effective inside-outside attack and were able to close the gap to four on a #Ryan MacKinnon# lay-up with 8 minutes remaining.
The game broke wide open, with five minutes on the clock and CUI up seven, when Dakota Downstipped in a fast break miss and Mackinnon was called for a foul. Downs made the free throws, which was followed up with a three and suddenly the margin grew to 14 following one possession. The battle seemed out of reach when a drained three in the last five minutes paced Concordia to the 23-point win over the Vikes.
The Vikes were led by MacKinnon and Michael Acheampong, who each netted 13 points, and seven and six rebounds, respectively..
The Vikes will travel to Biola tomorrow, Dec. 29, to take on the Eagles at 7:30 p.m. PDT.
