EVERETT, WA – The Everett Silvertips said goodbye to 2011 with a 5-2 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors in their New Year’s Eve showdown Saturday night at Comcast Arena. The defeat ends a streak of four straight games earning at least one point for the Silvertips, who will open their 2012 docket Wednesday night at home against Seattle.
Nick Walters and Josh Winquist found the back of the net for Everett, with Ryan Harrison assisting on both goals to give him five points his last two games. A four-goal second period put Moose Jaw in control to stay however, helping former Silvertips goaltender Luke Siemens earn the victory in his return to Comcast Arena.
The first period ended scoreless but featured a pair of fights as Josh Caron squared off with Dylan McIlrath and Dominik Bittner took on Cody Beach. Moose Jaw then scored twice in a 90-second span to take the lead early in the second frame. Jordan Wyton capitalized on a costly defensive zone turnover by the ‘Tips to open the scoring, and then Sam Fioretti jammed in the rebound of a sharp-angle shot by Justin Kirsch to quickly put the Warriors up by a pair.
The lead grew to 3-0 later in the period when Cody Beach backhanded a powerplay rebound through traffic and into the net at 15:01. Everett got on the board just 47 seconds later however, with Harrison starting the rush and then out-working the Warriors deep in their own zone to help set up Nick Walters’ slapshot goal from the left point. Just when it appeared the Silvertips would go to the locker room with momentum, Moose Jaw’s Kenton Miller crossed the Everett blueline and quickly wristed a shot past a screened Kent Simpson to put the visitors up 4-1 after 40 minutes of play.
The ‘Tips didn’t go away in the third however, outshooting the Warriors in the early going and then cutting into the deficit when Winquist beat Siemens from the left circle off another assist from Harrison at the 4:55 mark. Unfortunately Everett would get no closer before Fioretti capped off the win for Moose Jaw with his second goal of the night in the final three minutes.
Kent Simpson (5-17-1-5) finished with 36 saves for the Silvertips, while his former teammate Luke Siemens (20-7-3-2) stopped 22 shots for the Warriors. Moose Jaw outshot Everett 41-24 for the night and scored on 1 of 3 powerplay chances. The ‘Tips were 0 for 3 on the man-advantage.

Next up for the Silvertips is their third meeting with Seattle in the past nine days Wednesday at 7:05 pm at Comcast Arena. The ‘Tips will be looking to avenge their back-to-back shootout losses to the Thunderbirds in that game before starting a three-in-three weekend of U.S. Division games. Everett visits Portland on Friday before returning home to host Tri-City and Spokane on Saturday and Sunday.
