Happy New Year. On campus action is back and new for 2012 as the men’s and women’s basketball teams will host two Prairie division foes when the University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg descend upon UBC’s Okanagan campus to challenge the hometown Heat. The volleyball teams will enjoy a bye this weekend in their league but that won’t stop the women’s team from playing three matches at the University of Alberta in an exhibition tournament.

Basketball (Men’s and Women’s)
The basketball teams jump right back into league action as they host Canada West teams for just the second time, both the men’s and women’s teams captured their first wins of the season in their home opening weekend. The men’s team defeated the Regina Cougars 78-76 Friday Nov. 25, and the women’s team took out the Brandon Bobcats 72-48, Saturday Nov. 26.
In women’s basketball on Friday Jan. 6 the Heat (1-5) will host the University of Manitoba Bisons, the Bisons currently sit sixth in the prairie division (3-5) in league play, just one win out of a tie for a playoff spot, tipoff is set for 6 p.m. UBC Okanagan Heat men’s basketball team (1-5) will follow the women and try to handle Manitoba (5-4), action begins at 8 p.m. Moksha Yoga will be the feature sponsor during Friday’s basketball games with several free monthly passes available for fans in attendance as prize give-aways.
Saturday the UBC Okanagan Heat basketball teams will matchup against the University of Winnipeg Wesman. The Wesman will face the Heat Jan. 7. The women Wesman are currently 4-4 and will play the Heat Saturday at 6 p.m. The men’s game will feature the 2-6 Wesman versus the Heat at 8 p.m., these teams just played each other over the Christmas break in an exhibition tournament with Winnipeg defending its home court advantage and defeating the Heat, 82-49.

Volleyball (Men’s and Women’s)
The women’s volleyball will play in the New Years Classic hosted by the University of Edmonton Pandas women’s volleyball team. The Heat will play Friday Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. versus the Saskatchewan Huskies. Saturday Jan. 7 they play twice; 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. versus the Calgary Dinos and Regina Cougars respectively. All games are being held at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton AB, all game times listed in PST.
