Helping to prep for the tough second half of the Canada West men’s volleyball season, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies will host the EBWM Invitational beginning Thursday.
Joining the Huskies at the annual tournament is Canada West foe the University of Calgary Dinos, the Ontario University Athletics’ McMaster University Marauders and Quebec’s Laval University Rouge et Or.
Although the Huskies enter the EBWM Invitational with just a 1-9 record this season, the squad has pushed topped ranked teams to their limit in 2011-12. The Huskies have pushed the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 8 ranked team to five sets – losing in extra points in three of those matches in the final set. The Huskies were even ranked in the Top 10 this season.
Outside hitter Matthew Busse leads the Huskies with 138 kills on the season, followed by middle blocker Braden McLean with 100. Fifth-year middle blocker Geoffrey Zerr and outside hitter Paul Thomson have also chipped in with 71 and 80 kills each respectively. Chris Gilbert has tallied 451 assists this season. Zerr and McLean have also been strong blockers combining for 65 of the Huskies 82 blocks.
Scores will be emailed each night but no statistics will be kept at the tournament.
