Prince George, B.C. — The Cariboo Cougars ended a three-game BCMML losing streak with a convincing 5-2 decision over the visiting Valley West Hawks Saturday night.

The Cats came out fast and furious to start the game, peppering Hawks goaltender Luke Stripp with plenty of shots, including one from Brett Harris that opened scoring just 2:29 into the first.

Hayden-James Berra added a shorthanded tally midway through the second, doubling the Cougars’ lead. Chase Astorino scored just six minutes later but a pair of Hawks goals within 15 seconds immediately changed the complexion of the game making it 3-2 with just over two minutes remaining in the period. But Berra’s second of the night and 10th of the season restored a two-goal lead heading into the second intermission.

The Hawks earned a late third period power play and with the net empty for the extra attacker, Ryan Forbes put an errant Hawks pass into the open cage to seal the game in the final minute of the frame.

The Cougars outshot the Hawks 38-23 with David Readman earning his sixth win on the year. Berra finished the game with four points while Jake LeBrun and Ryan Gagnon each had two assists. Harris had a helper to go along with his first period goal.

The Cougars improve their record to 15-7-3. The Cougars and Hawks finish their two-game weekend set Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at Kin 1.
