Canadian Swimmers Energized with last stretch

OTTAWA – As the Olympic flag rose this morning at the British High Commission in Ottawa to mark the 200-day countdown to the opening of the London Olympic Games, Canadian swimmers were again energized with the next few months ahead.

“Tomorrow’s performances depends on today’s great work,” said Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and National Coach for Swimming Canada.

“At this point in their preparation, our swimmers need to stay focus on the day-to-day tasks and make every workout or race count.”

Olympic and Paralympic Team Trials

For Canada’s swim team, the ultimate test will take place at the 2012 Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Swimming Trials, March 27 to April 1 at the Olympic Pool in Montreal. It is a 6-day event packed with excitement and drama, where Canada’s swim team will be selected for London.

With 78 days to these trials, Canada’s elite swimmers will be hard at work training as well as racing against some stiff competition.

Beijing Bronze medalist in the 1500 freestyle, Ryan Cochrane of Victoria, will be amongst several Canadian National Team members competing at the Austin Grand Prix January 13-15. For Cochrane, this is an opportunity to race the 400m freestyle event against one of the World’s best, Peter Vanderkaay, 2008 Olympic finalist for the US.

After the World Championships last summer, Cochrane, 23, said that he aimed to be a podium threat in both the 1500 and the 400-freestyle in London.

“It’s important to win against our top competitors on their home turf,” added Lafontaine. “We want them to know that Canada is there and ready.”

Other Canadian Olympic hopefuls competing in Austin next weekend are: Julia Wilkinson of Stratford, ON, Alexa Komarnycky of Etobicoke, ON, Stefan Hirniak and Blake Worsley of Victoria, BC, Barbara Jardin, Victoria Poon, Charles Francis of Montreal, QC, and Audrey Lacroix of Pont-Rouge, QC.
