The #10 ranked University of Fraser Valley Cascades knocked off the #6 ranked University of Victoria Vikes 79-70 on Friday night.


Victoria, BC – UVic got off to a good start on Friday night and staked a 16-12 lead after the 1st quarter but a strong 2nd quarter by the Cascades saw them tie it a 34-34 to head into the halftime break.

Michael Acheampong had a strong half knocking down 12 points to lead all scorers while Joel Friesen (6 pts.) and Jasper Moedt (7 pts.) were instrumental for the Cascades.

The teams see sawed back and forth with the lead changing 6 times in the 3rd quarter but it was UFV who went in to the final quarter with a 2 point lead at 54-52.

Mike Berg had a strong 3 quarter with 12 points and a pair of rebounds to pace the Vikes.

The 4th quarter saw UFV’s Kyle Grewal take control pouring in 10 points, including 2 clutch 3 pointers, as the Cascades outscored the Vikes 25-18 to secure the upset victory.

Berg led all scorers with 19 points and 5 rebounds while Acheampong finished with 17 points. Grewal led the Cascades with 18 points and 6 rebounds and teammate Friesen added 17 points.

The Cascades stingy defence held Vikes leading scorer Ryan MacKinnon, who is averaging 20 points per game, to just 9 points on the night.

Despite the loss the Vikes still sit atop the Canada West Pacific Division standings with a 9-2 record while the win moves the Cascades to 7-4 and a secure hold on the 3rd and final playoff spot.

The teams are back in action tonight at UVic’s McKinnon gym with game time set for 7 pm.
