Brandon Wheat Kings

Brandon, MB. — The Brandon Wheat Kings will be hoping to salvage the final game of a this week’s 3-game Western Hockey League home stand Saturday night when they play host to the Victoria Royals.

The Wheat Kings have lost the first two games and five of six overall after dropping a 5-4 decision to the visiting Red Deer Rebels Friday night.

Chad Robinson’s goal at the 2:18 mark of the third period stood up as the winner as the ninth place Rebels moved to within three points of the struggling Wheat Kings for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Division.

Robinson’s goal came a minute after Brandon captain Mark Stone had tied the score on the powerplay.

Stone, who along with Swiss left-winger Alessio Bertaggia were honoured before the game for their participation in the recent World Junior Hockey Championship, was easily the best player on the ice Friday finishing the night with two goals and four points.

“We need to play more consistent for 60 minutes, that’s plain and simple” Stone told CKLQ’s Bruce Luebke after the gam., “We’ve been having lots of lapses in certain parts of the game that we definitely need to fix.”

Defencemen Brodie Melnychuk and Ryan Pulock also scored for the Wheat Kings, who jumped out to a 3-1 first period lead before giving up three unanswered second period goals to trail 4-3 after forty minutes.

Cory Milette, Charles Inglis, Marc Mackenzie and John Persson rounded out the scoring for the Rebels, who outshot the Wheat Kings 38-33.

Saturday’s game will feature the return of former Wheat Kings Dakota Conroy and Jordan Fransoo. Both were traded to Victoria earlier this week in exchange for 19-year old all star center Kevin Sundher.

Fans attending Saturday will have a chance to win one of three Blackberry Bolds from one of the three Brandon MTS Connect stores – Victoria Avenue, the Shoppers Mall and the Corral Centre.

Saturday is also another Source for Sports Family Night. Fans can purchase the Wheat Kings’ $44 Family Package – which includes 2 adult and 2 youth tickets, 4 soft drinks, 4 programs and 4 6″ Subs from Subway.
