Everett Silvertips

EVERETT, WA – Josh Winquist’s powerplay goal at 3:23 of overtime capped a stirring four-goal comeback as the Everett Silvertips topped the Spokane Chiefs 4-3 Friday night at Comcast Arena. The Chiefs held a comfortable 3-0 lead with less than ten minutes remaining before the ‘Tips began their rally to beat Spokane in the third head-to-head game between the clubs in the past six days.

Ryan Murray, Josh Birkholz, and Kohl Bauml helped spur the comeback with a goal and an assist each as the Silvertips scored four times in just over 13 minutes. Bauml’s tally knotted the game at three with just 27.7 seconds remaining in regulation. Everett dominated the special teams in the win, scoring on both of their powerplays and netting a shorthanded goal while going 4 for 4 on the penalty kill. Austin Lotz stopped 37 shots at the other end to earn his second career victory.

Spokane had built a 3-0 lead through 50 minutes, starting with a pair of first-period deflection goals. Darren Kramer redirected Blake Gal’s shot from the blueline at 7:45 to get the Chiefs on the board. Spokane’s second goal came in similar fashion as Dylan Walchuk tipped in a Brendan Kichton shot from the top of the circle to make it 2-0. Davis Vandane then put the deficit at 3-0 midway through the second period on screened wrist shot that snuck past Austin Lotz from the point.

That score remained through the first half of the third period before a shorthanded goal started the rally. With the Chiefs on the powerplay, Kohl Bauml and Ryan Harrison helped set up Ryan Murray for a wrister from between the circles, ending the shutout for Eric Williams. Everett made it 3-2 on the powerplay when Josh Birkholz snapped a cross-ice pass from Reid Petryk under the crossbar just over three minutes later.

Pushing hard for the rest of the period to tie the game, the ‘Tips finally did so during a scramble in the final minute. Nick Walters’ long slapshot from the point was knocked down in front before Bauml backhanded it into the net to force overtime. Then with 2:05 remaining in the extra session, Everett went to the powerplay after Walchuk was whistled for high-sticking Bauml. Just 28 seconds into the man-advantage, Birkholz sent a Murray pass across the slot to Winquist, who one-timed it past Williams to give the Silvertips the victory and send the home crowd into a frenzy.

Austin Lotz (2-5-0-1) won for the second time in his last five starts with a 37-save effort. Eric Williams (9-17-1-2) totaled 26 saves as the Chiefs outshot the ‘Tips 40-30 for the night.
