EVERETT, WA – The Everett Silvertips skated to a 41-22 shot advantage and carried the play throughout Sunday’s game, but the Kelowna Rockets escaped with a 3-2 shootout victory at Comcast Arena. Kelowna goaltender Jordon Cooke earned first star honors with 39 saves and turned aside all three Everett shooters as the Silvertips fell to 1-8 in shootouts this season.
Ryan Harrison and Reid Petryk scored goals as the Silvertips dominated the puck for most of the night, outshooting the Rockets in every period including overtime. Their shootout luck remained unchanged however in their sixth shootout defeat to come by a 1-0 tally this season.
Everett came out firing early on, but Kelowna tallied the game’s first goal when Colton Sissons beat Austin Lotz from the left circle at 6:26. The Silvertips responded later in the period when Kohl Bauml made a nice pass from behind the net to Ryan Harrison, who one-timed a quick shot a shot behind Jordon Cooke. Despite a season-high 18 shots in the first period and just eight for the Rockets, the game was tied at one through 20 minutes.
The second period settled down a bit and ended with a 9-4 shot edge for the ‘Tips, but not before Kelowna managed to take the lead. On the powerplay with four minutes left in the stanza, Myles Bell snapped Brett Bulmer’s cross-ice feed into the net to put Kelowna on top 2-1 after two.
The Silvertips kept coming in the third period, pressuring Cooke and then tying it at two just after a powerplay had expired. Josh Winquist fed a pass across the crease to Reid Petryk, who banged it home from in close for his first goal as a Silvertip at 6:18. After Cooke denied a few good chances to maintain the tie, Everett was forced into defensive mode with three consecutive Kelowna powerplays through the last six minutes of regulation and into overtime.
The ‘Tips killed off all three shorthanded situations and outshot the Rockets 3-2 in the overtime session, but the score remained into a shootout. Zach Franko put Kelowna on top in round one and Cooke did the rest with saves on all three Everett shooters to preserve a 3-2 win for the visitors.
Austin Lotz (2-5-0-2) fell to 0-2 in shootouts this season after making 20 saves in regulation and overtime. Jordon Cooke (5-4-2-2) allowed just the two goals on 41 shots to win for the Rockets. The Silvertips were 0 for 3 on the powerplay, while the Rockets finished 1 for 5.
