Medicine Hat, AB – Alex Gogolev and Trevor Cheek both scored in the first four minutes of the third period to break a 2-2 tie lifting the Calgary Hitmen to a 5-2 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers Saturday night at The Arena.

Joey Kornelsen into an empty net, Alex Roach and Danny Gayle also scored for the red hot Hitmen who have now won five in a row and 13 of their last 14 games.

Calgary built a 2-0 first period lead before the Tigers drew even on second period goals from James Bettauer and Hunter Shinkaruk.

Brandon Glover won the battle between the pipes making 28 saves in the Hitmen net to pick up the win. Tigers goalie Tyler Bunz made 33 saves in the loss.

Special teams also played a large role with Calgary going 3-3 on the powerplay, while Medicine Hat went 2-5.

The win was Calgary’s first over the Tigers in four tries this season and improves their overall record to 30-17-2-1. At 63 points the Hitmen pull within a point of Medicine Hat for third in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.

Calgary returns to action tomorrow afternoon against the U-S Division leading Tri-City Americans. Game time is 4:00 p.m. at Scotiabank Saddledome for the Wendy’s Novice Development Day game.
