SASKATOON — Recording 13 service aces the visiting UBC Okanagan Heat defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-10) Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
Chandler Proch had four aces for the Heat and Myrte Schon three. Jill Festival and rookie Katy Klomps added two aces each, both in the third game as Okanagan handcuffed Saskatchewan, the team with the softest stats in the league for serve reception.
Schon, the top gun for setter Proch, led the team with 15 kills, including a back-row attack to set up game point in the third game. Klomps had eight kills. Jill Festival added three stuff blocks.
Rookie Kayla Tycholiz and Candace Hueser posted nine kills each for the Huskies.
Saskatchewan caught the Heat on their heels in the first set and capitalized on an early four-point lead to take the set 25-23. UBC Okanagan found their legs in the second and never looked back easily taking the 25-18, 25-15 and 25-10 victories over the Huskies for the victory.
The win improves the Heat to 5-13 in its first year in CIS competition. Saskatchewan is still in search of their first win of the season at 0-18.
Saskatchewan completes the regular season next Friday and Saturday in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Bisons. Okanagan is home to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.
Match Notes: This was the final home match for Saskatchewan middle hitter Laura Beadle and power hitter Erin McGladdery, who are scheduled to convocate in the spring.
