The second race in the Frontrunners Island Race Series – the Cedar 12K – took place on Sunday, February 5, with Simon Whitfield winning in 37:36, just two seconds ahead of James Lander.

The race, which saw 449 finishers, was hosted by the Bastion Running Club, Nanaimo.

Whitfield and Esquimalt-based Lander were neck and neck for the entire race, and spectators saw a thrilling finish with Lander just being pipped to the post, finishing in 37:38. “The race was very hard. James knows how to hurt and pushed me the whole way,” said Whitfield. “I could tell right away he was going to be very hard to shake, and he kept coming back every time I surged to test him.”

Third place was Sean Chester (Aspire Running) in 39:01. Two seconds also separated the top two women with Care Nelson (Frontrunners Athletic Club) winning in 45:06, and the 2010 GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon women’s winner Catrin Jones second in 45:08. Third was Claire Morgan (Aspire Running) in 46:15.

Top masters male was Vince Brotherston (Comox Valley Road Runners) in 43:04, and top masters female was Sisi Hallam (Prairie Inn Harriers) in 47:28.

“The conditions were just ideal with hardly any wind to speak of and lots of beautiful Nanaimo sunshine,” said Race Director, John Durkin, from the Bastion Running Club. “Everything went smoothly from the race set-up to the post-run food, which was all prepared by club volunteers.” Whitfield also commented on the organization: “What really stood out for me is just how great the people are in the Island Race Series. Everyone is just so nice and the atmosphere is fantastic,”
