The University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team finished in second place with a three-round score of 40-over-par (308-289-307–904) at the 13th annual CSU San Marcos Invitational tournament at the Shadowridge Country Club located north of San Diego, Feb. 6-7.

Darren Hupfer of Edmonton finished third overall at two-over-par after shooting a tournament-low round of 68 in the second round Feb. 6 (74-68-76–218). He was three shots behind tournament winner Ryan Ellerbrook of Point Loma Nazarene who shot a two-under-par score (69-73-72–214) and one shot behind runner-up Thane Ringler of The Master’s College who registered a score of one-over-par (74-72-71–217).

Two other Vikes cracked the Top 10. Sophomore Carson Kallis of Red Deer, Alta., was tied for seventh overall at seven-over-par (77-71-75–223) while teammate James Holland of New Minas, N.S., was ninth at eight-over-par (77-72-75–224). Senior Dylan Cann of Calgary was the other UVic player in scoring in a tie for 39th, while Sam Holland, also of New Minas, N.S., was tied for 45th.

Unranked in the NAIA Top 25 poll conducted in November, 2011, the Vikes performance should vault them into a position of recognition as they defeated several Top 25 teams, showing depth and consistency in play.
