Thompson Rivers earned a decisive 5-1 win over UVic Saturday night in BCIHL hockey action.
February 11, 2012, Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria Hockey Club and the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack met Saturday night at the Ian Stewart Complex Arena. UVic gave the nod to Jason Margolus while TRU countered with Riley Wall.
On the heels of last weekend’s series split in Eastern Washington, the University of Victoira Hockey Club looked to upend the third-ranked Wolfpack. The first period saw few whistles and a very quick pace. UVic would fail to capitalize on numerous chances while the Wolfpack scored the lone goal of the frame with less than three minutes remaining. After one, UVIC 0 TRU 1.
More fast-paced, transition hockey by both teams would begin the second period and UVic would strike first. At the 15:07 mark, Doug Evans would slide in from the point and rifle a shot off the crossbar and in to level the score. Any momentum UVic gained from Evans’ tying goal quickly disappeared. Thompson Rivers scored on the power play at 12:23 and would go on to dominate the play before netting another goal before the period came to a close. After two, UVIC 1 TRU 3.
The third period would be more of the same as the Wolfpack controlled the puck while a frustrated UVic side continued to press on. Thompson Rivers found a pair of goals in the third period while missed opportunities plagued UVic. Final score, UVIC 1 TRU 5.
TRU goaltender Riley Wall turned away 37 of 38 shots in a first star performance. .
UVic went 1/6=16.7% on the power play while Okanagan College was 2/5=40.0%. UVic was out-shot by the Coyotes 38-26.
UVic will have an opportunity to split the series Sunday afternoon against the Wolfpack. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 PM at Ian Stewart Complex Arena.
