Tuesday, February 14, 2012 – Wrestlers Erica Wiebe (Calgary) and Connor Malloy (Regina) have been named Canada West Athletes of the Week.
FEMALE: Erica Wiebe, Calgary (wrestling)
Erica Wiebe of the Calghary Dinos opened the defence of her 2011 CIS title at 72 kg this weekend with a dominant performance at the Canada West wrestling championships in Regina, winning all four of her matches to claim conference gold.
Two of her wins came by fall, one by a 1-0, 5-0 shutout, and the fourth by default as Wiebe cruised to the gold medal. For her efforts, she was crowned the Canada West female outstanding wrestler.
In addition to her MVP award, Wiebe was also recognized with the Student-Athlete Community Service award. The Dinos’ team captain, she works with several organizations including a group which works to improve the lives of cancer survivors through physical activity. She also sits on the board of directors for the Calgary Amateur Wrestling Association.
Wiebe will head to the CIS championships atLakeheadUniversityinThunder Bay, Ont. as the favourite to repeat at 72 kg when the meet convenes, Feb. 24-25.
MALE: Connor Malloy, Regina (wrestling)
Connor Malloy from the Regina Cougars was named the 2012 Canada West Outstanding Male Wrestler after putting together a perfect 4-0 record to win the gold medal at 76 kg over the weekend at the conference championships inRegina.
Malloy didn’t surrender a point during the meet, defeatingSaskatchewan’s Blake Pritchard by superiority (7-0, 7-0),Calgary’s Adam Gordon by superiority (7-0, 7-0),Winnipeg’s Matthew Tripple by fall, andAlberta’s Coleman Brinker by decision (1-0, 3-0).
Malloy has won three Canada West gold medals and one silver medal in his four years wrestling at the CIS level, all of which have come at 76 kg. He will represent the U of R at the national championships inThunder Bay, Ont. On Feb. 24-25.
