EVERETT, WA (ISN) – The Everett Silvertips stayed within a goal of the Portland Winterhawks through nearly 57 minutes before eventually suffering a 4-1 loss Saturday night at Comcast Arena. Two late goals extended what had been a 2-1 Portland lead as the ‘Tips lost for just the third time in the past eight games.
Jordyn Boyd scored the lone goal for Everett, while Kent Simpson stopped 43 shots to keep the Silvertips in it until the end despite a 47-27 shot disadvantage. The ‘Tips shut out Portland’s top-ranked powerplay unit on five opportunities, but were 0 for 3 on their own powerplay as they fell to the Winterhawks for the sixth straight game.
Portland opened the scoring just over two minutes into the contest and only 30 seconds after play resumed following a pane of glass coming loose. A long rebound off Derrick Pouliot’s initial shot caromed out front on the play and found the stick of Taylor Leier, whose shot ricocheted past Kent Simpson. The Silvertips actually outshot the ‘Hawks 16-10 in the first twenty minutes, but that goal proved to be the only one of the period.
The ‘Tips opened the second frame by killing off the final 1:25 of a Winterhawks two-man advantage and then another 5-on-4 powerplay immediately afterward to stay within one. A turnover in the ‘Tips zone proved costly a short time later however, as Oliver Gabriel received Sven Bartschi’s pass and made a nice move around Kent Simpson to give Portland a 2-0 lead. Everett cut the lead in half later in the period when Reid Petryk helped create a turnover that resulted in Jordyn Boyd intercepting a pass and immediately rifling a shot to the top corner from the right circle.
Trailing just 2-1 entering the third, the ‘Tips best chance at tying the game was thwarted when Mac Carruth gloved Ryan Harrison’s breakaway attempt to keep the score unchanged. The Winterhawks maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the period, outshooting Everett 16-6 to prevent a comeback. Sven Bartschi scored an insurance goal on a breakaway with just over three minutes left and then Ty Rattie added a later empty-netter to complete the 4-1 Portland win.
Kent Simpson (13-26-1-5) lost for just the second time in his last seven starts while earning first-star honors with the 43-save performance. Mac Carruth (36-13-1-0) stopped a total of 26 shots to extend his league lead to 36 wins on the year.
